Gold bars: types, weights and fineness

Manufacture is not purity

Cast bars are formed in a mould; minted bars are finished from prepared metal blanks. Either method can produce high-fineness gold. Read the weight and fineness rather than judging the surface.

Read the fineness mark

995 means 99.5% gold, 999 means 99.9%, and 999.9 means 99.99%. A 100 g bar therefore contains respectively 99.5, 99.9 or 99.99 g of fine gold. A 10 g bar marked 999.9 contains 9.999 g.
