Identify the components first
A piece may combine metal, plating, treated stones, glue and thread. A safe method for one component can damage another. Use a soft cloth and separate storage to reduce scratches.
Avoid aggressive shortcuts
Ultrasonic and steam cleaning are unsuitable for pearls and some treated gems, including certain emeralds. Do not use bleach, toothpaste or improvised chemical mixtures. Preserve antique finishes and ask a professional before removing patina.
Check before wearing
Let perfume dry before putting jewellery on. Stop wearing a piece with a loose stone, damaged clasp or worn thread. Repairs, replating and restringing should follow the piece’s actual condition and professional advice, not a universal timetable.
