Real gold with a lighter color

White gold combines gold with other metals, which may include palladium or nickel depending on the product. Many pieces are rhodium-plated for a bright white surface. White 18K gold contains the same 75% gold as yellow 18K; the other metals differ.

Why its appearance changes

Plating can wear and expose the alloy underneath. This alone does not prove a fake. Replating needs depend on friction, care and composition. Ask for service costs rather than assuming a fixed schedule.

Distinguish the metals

Sterling silver contains 92.5% silver and may also be plated; platinum is a separate metal with its own declared fineness. For a daily ring, consider band thickness, repairability, setting and maintenance. If you have a known nickel sensitivity, ask for the alloy composition: “white” or “plated” does not mean nickel-free. Keep an invoice stating metal and purity; color or a photograph cannot settle the identity.
