Recognise the pattern

Cable chains use round or oval links. Curb chains have flattened interlocking links; Figaro alternates shorter and longer links. Rope chains twist visually, box chains use square-shaped links, snake chains have a smooth surface and wheat chains look braided.

Look beyond the style name

The same pattern can be solid or hollow and can differ greatly in weight. A style name does not establish strength, purity or value. Compare actual dimensions, net gold weight and the quality of joins and clasp.

Wear and maintenance

Choose a chain suited to the pendant’s weight and bail. Ask whether damaged sections can be repaired. Avoid forcing knots or making sharp bends, especially in smooth or hollow constructions.
