Design is not a quality grade
A solitaire highlights one main stone. A halo surrounds it with smaller stones; a three-stone design combines a centre and two side stones. Pavé uses closely set small stones, while eternity designs carry stones around a band. These names do not establish diamond quality.
How the stone is secured
Prongs expose more of the stone. A bezel surrounds its edge; channel settings place stones between metal walls. Small pavé settings require careful inspection and maintenance.
Consider everyday use
Check snagging, stone security and comfort. Carat is weight, not visible size: shape and proportions affect appearance. Ask how the setting can be serviced, and stop wearing a piece if a stone becomes loose.
