Four separate characteristics

Carat measures weight: 1 ct = 0.2 g. Colour describes colour characteristics within the applicable grading system. Clarity considers internal and external features. Cut concerns workmanship and proportions; it is not simply the outline shape.

Total weight versus the main stone

A ring with a 0.60 ct centre and 0.40 ct of side stones has 1 ct total weight. It is not equivalent to a single 1 ct diamond. Ask for the main stone’s weight and dimensions separately.

Use the report with the jewellery

Check the report’s issuer, scope and matching stone details. Compare appearance in ordinary lighting. A grading report does not set the jewellery’s price, evaluate all its metalwork or guarantee comfort and resale value.
