More than a single history of money

Gold has been used for adornment, ceremony, authority and exchange. These roles differ across times and places; it is misleading to treat every historical gold object as money in the modern sense.

Examples from collections

Ancient Egyptian objects connect gold with royal, divine and funerary settings. In precolonial cultures of the Americas, gold objects could express sacred and social meanings. Finds from Tillya Tepe in Afghanistan illustrate contacts and influences across regions of Asia.

Read the object’s context

Museum labels help establish date, place, material and technique. Keep documented provenance separate from attractive stories. Before cleaning or repairing a potentially historic piece, seek specialist advice: its historical value may matter beyond its metal weight.
