A varied heritage

Arab and Islamic history spans different regions and periods. Gold can express political authority, craftsmanship, exchange and family memory. A single design or modern market name cannot represent this entire history.

Coins as evidence

The British Museum’s dinar of Abd al-Malik dated 77 AH, 696–697 CE, illustrates how inscriptions connect religion, authority and economic life. Abbasid material associated with al-Mahdi provides further context. Historical mithqal weights should not automatically be treated as one modern universal standard.

Document family pieces

Record ownership, photographs, inscriptions and family accounts. Label oral history as such until supported by evidence. Seek advice before altering an inherited piece, and separate historical or sentimental significance from melt value.
