Three ways to quote a charge

Making charges pay for manufacturing and finishing, and a commercial quote may also include retailer margin. There is no single worldwide charge for a country or karat. For a 10 g item, 25 per gram means 250; a fixed item fee of 250 also means 250. An 8% premium on metal worth 3,500 is 280.

Read the total

At 350 per gram, 10 g of gold is worth 3,500. Add 250 making charges for 3,750 before tax. A purely illustrative 10% tax on the whole amount adds 375, making 4,125. Actual tax rates and taxable bases depend on the country, product and invoice.

Use the calculator correctly

The buyer’s calculator takes a charge per gram. Divide a fixed fee by the gold weight; convert a percentage to money first. Compare equal karats and net weights. Ask in writing whether making charges are recoverable on resale and check exchange terms. Keep stone value separate, and match the tax input to the invoice.
